Attributes of God-fearing Person(متقی) in light of Surah Al-Baqarah
Assalam-u-Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh!
Allah Almighty says:
Verily the noblest of you in the sight of Allah is the most God-fearing of you. (Al-Hujurat, 49:13)
So, in this article, we’re going to explore the attributes of a God-fearing person (In light of the Qur’an). Adopt these attributes to achieve the pleasure of Allah Almighty & to get the reward of Jannah.
Verses no 2 to 5 of Surah Al-Baqara perfectly explain a God-fearing & righteous person. So let’s start…
At the very start of Surah Al-Baqrah, verse no 02, Allah Almighty says:
ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبُ لَا رَيْبَ ۛ فِيهِ ۛ هُدًى لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ
This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah
First, let me make clear that what is this Ayah is about. Allah Almighty says, Qur’an is the ultimate truth with no doubt at all. You may found some other good books in other cultures or religions, but this is a perfect one. Even the writer of all books can’t assure that this book has mistakes or not. But Allah Almighty is claiming that there is no doubt at all.
In Previous Surah Al_Fatihah (Read Explanation), we pray to Allah Almighty:
اِهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ
Guide us along the Straight Path
And Now Allah Almighty says, here is the book with no doubt, in which is the guidance of Sirat-ul-Mustaqeem, the guidance of that path that leads to Jannah.
But Allah Almighty also says this in this ayah:
,a guidance for those conscious of Allah(2nd part of verse 02 see above)
Hidaya is only for those who are conscious of Allah Almighty. Who is Muttaqi? The word Muttaqi Means to refrain from wrong deeds, and be god conscious and yearning & making efforts for being a better Muslim. Those who are not Muttaqi, can’t explore the meaning of the Qur’an in the true sense. He is the one who avoids sins, who is worried about his deeds and knows his purpose in life. He’s not like the people, who don’t concern about themselves that in which direction they are going.
Get ready, attributes of a God-fearing person are going to start.
Allah Almighty says in verse 03 of Surah Al-Baqarah:
ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْغَيْبِ وَيُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَـٰهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ
Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them
This is a description of a God-fearing & conscious person. Allah Almighty told us about three attributes of a pious person in this Ayah.
Attribute no 1:
Believe on unseen things
Who believe in the unseen
As you saw, the first attribute is of Muttaqi to have faith in unseen things. He doesn’t judge things over science or on his own intelligence. He will believe in everything about which Allah Almighty says. He believes in angels, Jannah, Jahanum, Hereafter, Iblees, God, Revelation, etc.
Some people say that only Science is the ultimate truth. They don’t believe in those things which are not proved by science and they critically mock the religion. They try to justify everything on the parameter of their own intelligence. Now, many facts are proven by science. Just try to imagine the life of Sahaba Karam(RA). At that time, there are no concepts of science. But still How are they were all firm in their belief. They believed in every saying of Allah Almighty and His prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) without any hesitation.
Today things are getting possible because of Science. Even researches are continuing on the soul, Portals, Dimensions, Dreams, etc. Maybe some other hidden things may be proved, and maybe it didn’t prove. What I meant to say, is that we have to believe in every saying of Allah Almighty, even though it goes against our intellectual.
Attribute no 2:
Establishing Prayer
who establish Prayer
Not that, Establish Prayer, (Not offer the prayer). There’s a lot of difference between establishing and offering prayer. We’ll cover it as we move forward. Now, Salah is a matter of action. Do you have a belief in God and his saying? Then it’s time to show this belief via your actions and deeds. Whenever Mozan calls you, it is the time for the test & trial of your belief.
But why Allah Almighty gave so much importance to Salah for being a god-conscious? Actually, it is a major thing in Islam. Many times, it is said to seek help through salah and establish Salah in Qur’an. Now, what is establishing Salah? To offer it on its the proper time(all prayer, not the 1 or 2 in a day), to do all parts of Salah (Qiayam, Sajood, Ruku) in a perfect way.
Abdullah ibn Masood (RA) narrates that he asked the Prophet (PBUH): “Which of the deeds is loved by Allah the most?” He replied: “Salah at its proper time.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
Moreover, Allah Almighty says in Surah Al-Mu’minun (18: 1,2)
Certainly, will the believers have succeeded:
which type of believer? check-in next Ayah
those who humble themselves in prayer
Mean when they offer prayer, they drop all worldly thoughts from their mind and hearts. And Perform salah in a perfect way.
But the sorrowful matter is that we show numerous sorts of negligence regarding Salah. We should make all efforts to remove them. Because Allah Almighty doesn’t like such Salahs, which are offered just for the sake of removing a burden.
Allah Almighty says in Sural Al_Ma’un:
Woe, then, to those who pray, but are heedless(unmindful) in their Prayers (Surah Al_Ma'un: 107: 4,5)
So, Establishing prayer is an attribute of a god-fearing person. Anyways, let’s move on to two 3rd attributes of Muttaqi.
Attribute no 3:
Spending money
and spend out of what We have provided for them
Who they spent in way of Allah, without expecting anything from someone. This deed is purely for Allah. We’ll not talk more about this attribute, as it a simple and clear one to follow. So let’s move on next.
Now the 4th and 5th attribute of a God-fearing person (Muttaqi) is in verse no 4th of Surah Al-Baqarah.
And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith].
Attribute no 4:
Believe on previous Scriptures
The God-conscious persons believe in Qur’an, which is the ultimate truth and revealed upon our Holy Prophet Hazarat Muhammad (SAW), and they also believe in previous Holy books & scriptures which were revealed by Allah on other Prophets. Like Torah, Bible, etc. Although these books are changed by people (as Allah Almighty mentions in Qur’an too, Surah Al-Baqarah: 79), still we have believed that they are from Allah Almighty, and now their message is changed.
Now let’s come to the last attribute of a God-Fearing person.
Attribute no 5:
Beleive on Hereafter(Akhira)
وَبِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ هُمْ يُوقِنُونَand of the Hereafter they are certain
This is the most important factor of being a Muslim, being a Muttaqi. First Let me explain what is Aakhira(Hereafter)
These are some points about Hereafter
A Muslim knows that he’s answerable to Allah and he has some purpose for this life on the earth.
He knows that this is Temporary life, Hereafter will appear at a specific time( which Allah Almighty knows), and on that day he will be answerable for his all deeds and actions.
He will be born again, he will be asked about his deeds in the world and would get the reward in form of Jannah (May Allah Almighty grant us), or get punished in form of Jahanum (May Allah Almighty save us).
He knows that one’s success is not worldly success, If someone is prosperous in this world, and has a lot of wealth then it’s doesn’t mean he is successful. Successful are those about which Allah Almighty says in Qur’an:
فَمَن زُحْزِحَ عَنِ ٱلنَّارِ وَأُدْخِلَ ٱلْجَنَّةَ فَقَدْ فَازَThen, whoever is spared the Fire and is admitted to Paradise has indeed been successful (Al-Imran, 3:185)
These are the basic building block of Akhira.
A God-fearing person always has a firm belief in the hereafter, and his belief can be shown from his actions and deeds.
It’s time for some Questions. (Do it with yourself and ask answers from yourself)
Do your actions show that we have a firm belief in Akhria?
Do you include Allah Almighty in your dealings with peoples(parents, Friends, Relatives, etc)
Do you avoid sins and worried about your permanent life?
Are you careless in your life?
Are your daily routine shows that your focus is also on hereafter?
These are some basics questions that you can do to yourself for Tazkiea-e-Nafas(Purification of the soul). Because Allah Almighty says in Surah Al-Shamas after many oaths that:
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا
Successful indeed is the one who purifies their soul
But Bitter truth is that in this world, we want to achieve perfection, we want to run many businesses, want to get higher degrees, want to earn a lot of money want to be a perfect successful person. But when it comes to the matter of religious life, we always say, we’ll see what’s gonna happen in hereafter. Why don’t we try to be perfect, so that Allah Almighty grants us Jannah?
Now I’m going to end up this article with this next verse of Surah Al-Baqarah
It is they who are ˹truly˺ guided by their Lord, and it is they who will be successful.
So, here is Allah Almighty is saying that those who have all the above attributes, are successful and on Sirat-ul-Mustaqeem.
Conclusion
Alhamdulillah, we summed up 5 verses of Surah Al-Baqrah, we learned about the attributes of a God-fearing person. Kindly keep practicing Islam & have a firm belief, without taking care of mockers. They do not know which path you’re on. Purify your souls and keep me in your prayer too.
